EDWARD VIII’S SERVICE IN WORLD WAR I
EDWARD VIII. (1894 –1972) King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth; Emperor of India; the first monarch in British history to voluntarily abdicate his throne; later, after his abdication was known as: ‘The Duke of Windsor’. Exceedingly-scarce Partly-printed Document Signed “Edward” as Captain, while serving in the Royal Armed Forces during WW I, from ‘Wellington Station’. ‘13 September, 1916’. Edward signs and approves a “One Day Pass [for] Private Bartlett – [of the] 10th Platoon” One page, oblong octavo, [3 1/2 x 6 ½ inches approximately]. The pass also notes that: “If a general mobilization is ordered every soldier on pass must return immediately to his unit without waiting for instructions. / ‘Bartlett’ has permission to be absent from his quarters”. This piece is a remarkable survivor with the usual fold marks, and with the manuscript portions filed out in purple indelible pencil, while Edward’s signature is in ink. Just an exceedingly rare piece from a man whose life was the center of global headlines from his birth to his death.
