THOMAS JEFFERSON AND JAMES MADISON

SIGNED MEDITERRANEAN SHIP’S PASSPORT

FOR THE BRIG BETSEY OF NEW YORK ~  1806

JEFFERSON, THOMAS.   (1743-1826).  3rd President of the United States and principal author of the Declaration of Independence.  Partly-printed Document Signed “Th. Jefferson” and countersigned  by  the  Secretary  of  State,  “James  Madison”.  Tall quarto, [approximately 10 1/2 x 12 inches – sight] on vellum, with embossed paper wafer Seal of State of the United States affixed at lower left.   June 14, 1806.  For the “Brig Betsey” out of New York.  Overall fine condition, with both Jefferson’s signature,  and Madison’s signature strong and legible.  Engraved vignette of a lighthouse and ships in a harbor scene at top center.  The upper most vignette of a sailing ship is either missing or is matted over –  yet the entire document presents itself very well.  The document is matted and framed in a simple, vintage mahogany color wood frame, as shown in illustrations, and most likely has been this way for many years.

The overall presentation of this piece will not disappoint.
