AND COMMENTS ON POSSIBLE NEW BOOKS AND MENTIONS THE COMING PUBLICATION OF HER NEWEST BOOK CALLED ‘COUNTRY NOTES

SACKVILLE-WEST, VICTORIA MARY (1892-1962) English author and poet. Sackvill-West is also remembered for her affair with fellow novelist Virginia Woolf. Uncommon Typed Letter Signed, “V. Sackville-West,” on her name-imprinted Sissinghurst Castle, Kent letterhead.  Two pages [recto and verso], octavo. Kent. June 8, 1939.  Docketed: “RECEIVED JUNE 19 1939  – M.J.” stamped at upper left of page one. Two words added in her hand.  To: “Dear Mr. Johnson”:  She writes:

“Dear Mr. Johnson, Thank you very much for sending me the review of ‘Solitude’. I was very interested to see it as I do not employ and American press-cutting agency and should be very please to see any others of particular interest which come along.

I am afraid that neither of the suggest books on Mrs. Carlyle or Lord Buckhurst will materialize. Instead of that I am going to do a book on certain English places and outstanding characters connected with them, into which I can introduce a chapter or two on Lord Buckhurst and Knole. I do not think that the interest in Lord Buckhurst would warrant an entire book devoted to him and as to Mrs. Carlyle, I do not really feel myself sufficiently in sympathy with her or her period to attempt a full length biography. It is extremely good of you to say that you are sending me the new life of her such has just come out in America. I will, of course, offer your firm the other book which I propose to begin as soon as possible.

In the meantime I understand that Mr. Michael Joseph is going to offer you my book called ‘Country Notes’ which he is publishing this autumn. I believe he is now on his way to American with a proportion of the manuscript to show you. Yours sincerely, V. Sackville West.”

Her letters are uncommon, and this one has content much above average.  A perfect choice for the literary collector.
