To “Dear Gross”, a Hartford, New Haven, bookseller. Once torn, now repaired on verso, else very fine condition. Clemens writes:
“Dear Gross – one of this firm can swear we haven’t bought any J W Carlyle book this year. If two or more of your firm can swear we did, we succumb; but otherwise will you just credit us with $3 on next account and oblige, yours truly, S.L. Clemens”.
