SCARCE “SWORD IN HAND” MASSACHUSETTS-BAY TREASURY LOAN CERTIFICATE, ISSUED FOR CITIZEN-FUNDING OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS-BAY, SIX PERCENT TREASURY LOAN CERTIFICATE. Partially-printed page, small quarto. [Approximately 9 x 9 inches].  [Boston, Massachusetts]; December 1, 1777. “Sword in Hand” engraving by Nathaniel Hurd, Boston silversmith and engraver.  Docketed across the front as having 1st interest payment made of: 3 Pounds 5 shillings and 9 pence; left margin ‘security’ cut canceled, as issued. Some wear in folds, else near fine condition.  This is: Treasury loan certificate, No. 3855, certifying Thomas Baker’s payment of Fifty-four Pounds 17 shillings “…for the Use and Service of the State of Massachusetts-Bay…” during the Revolutionary War.  The certificate entitles Baker to a repayment of the loan by “…first Day of March, A.D. 1781” at an annual interest rate of six percent. The document is signed by Henry Gardner, State Treasurer, and countersigned by three committee members, John Scollay, Ezekiel Price, & Peter Boyer.  A very displayable piece of early financial Americana.
