“My dear Madam, I am expecting in the month of April to move from Andover to Hartford and I have been recommended by Mrs. Professor Smith to apply to you to take the care and oversight of packing my furniture and seeing it unpacked and arrange the new house. I shall probably need your services for a fortnight from about the middle of April. Will you please write me a line to say if you can come and on what terms? Very truly yours, H.B. Stowe.”
In the United States, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was the best-selling novel and the second best-selling book of the 19th century, following only sales of the Bible. It is credited with helping fuel the abolitionist cause in the 1850s. Her letters have become scarce in the marketplace, as many have been added to institutional collections.
