FRANKLIN PIERCE ~ AS PRESIDENT
ADDS HIS APPROVAL TO THE REQUEST FOR AN APPOINTMENT TO BE MADE WITHIN THE PHILADEPHIA CUSTOMS HOUSE FOR AN INDIANA GENTLEMAN
PIERCE, FRANKLIN. (1804-1869). Fourteenth President of the United States (1853-7). Scarce Autograph Endorsement Signed, “F. Pierce”, as President. One page, quarto. June 24, 1853. Very fine condition. Penned in a vertical column on the verso of an ALS of William Hayden English (1822 – 1896). The American politician, who was then serving as a U.S. Representative from Indiana (1853 to 1861) and who was the Democratic Party’s nominee for Vice President of the United States in 1880. He asks Pierce to intervene in appointing George W. Jackson to position in the Customs House in Philadelphia. Pierce in reply, forwards the letter with his recommendation to the “Hon[orable[ C. Brown” in charge of the Customs House in Philadelphia. He writes:
“My dear Sir, I think there is no doubt that Mr. Jackson is a gentleman of high character and superior qualifications – Mr. English is the M[ember] [of] C[ongress] Elect from the 2nd Congressional Dist[rict] Indiana. I do not intend to interfere with y[ou]r appointments, but ask for your favorable consideration of this case. F. Pierce / June 24.”
Just a choice item for the collector that wants their items to be written while serving in the office of the President, and that contain some historic content of interest.
