PAYMENT FOR SERVICES IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION PROVIDED BY A SURGEON OF THE GENERAL HOSPITAL OF THE PENNSYLVANIA LINE
DICKINSON, JOHN. (1732-1808) American lawyer and politician. Signer of both the U.S. Constitution and the Articles of Confederation; militia officer during the American Revolution; a Continental Congressman from Pennsylvania and Delaware; a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention; and President of both Delaware and Pennsylvania. Partially-Printed Document Signed, “John Dickinson President,” as President of Pennsylvania. One page, oblong octavo. Philadelphia. April 17, 1783. The document reads, in part:
“ … Pay to Doctor William Smith late Senr. Surgeon General Hospital of the Pennsylvania Line, or his order, the sum of sixty one pounds fourteen shillings & ten pence being one year’s interest on his depreciation certificate …”
Accompanied by a printed steel engraving of Dickinson, depicted in a half length pose, with his name and printed facsimile signature under his image. Just a nice early piece of medical / financial Americana.
