In the spring of 1933, Arnold Gingrich, worked to establish a new men’s magazine to be called “Esquire”. Gingrich after meeting Hemingway in a bookstore wrote to him and outlined his plans for the new magazine. Surprisingly, Hemingway agreed to write for the new publication, and he contributed an article entitled: “Marlin off the Morro – a Cuban Letter”, which appeared in the first issue that appeared September 1, 1933. It is more than probably that this receipt reflects either receipt for the manuscript’s return or payment for same. Simply a choice, vintage Hemingway item!
