SHAFTER, WILLIAM RUFUS. (1835-1906) Union Army officer during the Civil War; awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks; In April 1864 he was appointed Colonel of the 17th United States Colored Infantry and led the regiment at the Battle of Nashville; played a prominent role as a Major General in the Spanish-American War.
