RARE HOLOGRAPH LETTER WRITTEN BY AUSTRIAN COMPOSER ALBAN BERG, LESS THAN ONE MONTH BEFORE HIS SUDDEN DEATH

BERG, ALBAN.  (1885-1935).  Austrian composer; Berg is remembered as one of the most important composers of the 20th century and to date is the most widely performed opera composer among the Second Viennese School.  Scarce Autograph Letter Signed, “Alban Berg”, on his stamped “Alban Berg, Wien XIII/I Trauttmansdorffgasse 27” stationery.  Vienna, February 17, 1935.  Two pages, large octavo.  Very fine condition.  Accompanied by original envelope addressed in his hand to Frau Hentsch.  Berg writes:

“Dear Madam, your charming letter came as a great surprise to me: of course I remember our meeting in Zurich and that alone would be reason enough to take pleasure in your kind invitation.  I am sincerely grateful to you, dear Madam, as I am naturally greatly relieved that these wonderful accommodations will be awaiting me for my stay in Geneva, not to mention your beautiful company.  Grillon will advise me of my expected arrival date in Geneva, after which I will be free as to inform you of it, dear Madam.  With best wishes, I remain, Yours very truly, Alban Berg.”
