PRESIDENT ULYSSES S. GRANT
RECOMMENDS A NEW WEST POINT GRADUATE
GRANT, ULYSSES S(IMPSON). (1822-85). Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-77). Autograph Letter Signed, “U.S. Grant”, as President, on imprinted Executive Mansion stationery. Two pages, octavo. “Washington, D.C.”, May 18, 1870. Near fine condition. To “H.D. Cooke, Esq.” Grant writes:
“This will introduce to you Lt. Griffith, of the Eng. Cookes of the Army, who graduated among the first five of his class a few years since, and who I take pleasure in recommending as a young man of ability, energy and integrity. Yours truly, U.S. Grant”.
Full ALS’s as President on Executive Mansion stationery penned by Grant are, in our experience, quite scarce. This is a fine example for any collector requiring a letter written “as President”.
