MAY-LING, SOONG (MADAME CHIANG KAI-SHEK).  (1897-2003) First Lady of the Republic of China, the wife of former President Chiang Kai-Shek.  Revealing and Important Typed Letter Signed “Yours Cordially / Mayling Soong Chiang”, on her black-bordered mourning stationery.  One full page, quarto.  “Taipei, Taiwan / Republic of China / April 23, 1975”.  To noted TV and newspaper personality, and moderator of ‘Meet the Press’ “Lawrence E. Spivak”, Washington, DC.   She writes:

“It is good of you to send me your message of condolences.  I am comforted that among the great moderators and commentators in the news media there are few who have had the courage of their convictions to be fair and impartial in their reporting or analyses.

History is a hard and demanding task master, and when all the din and dust of the moment have settled, it will record with even-handed impartiality.  Impartial in the sense that there may be contentions of pros and cons as to the wisdom of certain actions but posterity will judge the great and little figures of every period in time according to the criteria of intent, character and dedication.  In these I firmly believe.

I hope that when our national and my personal periods of mourning are over, I can come to the United States, the country I love best besides China….”

 

In very fine condition.  Just a wonderful and poignant letter from the former first lady of the Republic of China.
