FILLMORE, MILLARD. (1800-74). Thirteenth President
of the U.S. (1850-3). Autograph Letter Signed, “Millard Fillmore.”
One full page, quarto. Buffalo, New York, January 18, 1844. Fine condition.
Addressed on integral address leaf to “Seneca Wood, Esq., Aurora
Cayuga Co., N. York.” Fillmore writes:
“My dear Sir, I returned from the Vice
Chancellor’s court at Rochester a week ago today, and was immediately
taken with the Influenza which has confined me at my room until now.
I learn on coming into my office this morning that one of our clerks
wrote you some time since that the notices and subpoenas which you
sent me had been served upon Mrs. Rhoda Coan [?], and the notice upon
John Burhance and wife: and I am now informed that the subpoenas have
been duly sent upon Jeb Halstead. I did not myself see Mr. Kock the
deputy sheriff at Williamsville who made the service and therefore
can not say what the probability is of procuring the witnesses attendance.
But he has made the requisite affidavit to show the service regular.
Respectfully yours, Millard Fillmore.”
