leader. Typed Letter Signed, “J.C. Smuts,” on crested
and imprinted Union of South Africa, Prime Minister’s Office
letterhead. One full page, folio. Cape Town, May 14, 1920. Written
in bottom blank margin in another hand: “Another signature of
Gen. Smuts for the autograph collection. With love, yours, Ernie.
4 Aug. 20. Enclosed are also some stamps for the philatelist. EN.”
Very fine condition. To “His Excellency, Major-General Sir Edward
Northey, K.C.M.G., C.B., Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Protectorate
of British East Africa, Nairobi.” Smuts writes:
“Your Excellency, Bearer hereof, the Revd.
W. Wilkinson Rider, has been delegated together with the Revd. Martin
J. White and Mr. Charles Baker by the Annual Conference of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church of South Africa to visit East Africa with a view
to establishing a Mission in that Territory. Revd. Wilkinson Rider
has been labouring in South Africa for many years and I would be glad
if his movements could be facilitated as far as your regulations allow.
