NEWMAN, JOHN H. (1801-90). English clergyman. Good
Autograph Letter Signed, “John H. Newman.” Two pages,
octavo. “Oratory, Birmingham,” January 19, 1857. Fine
condition. To “My dear Sir.” Newman writes:
“Accept my best congratulations on the
happy news you tell me about yourself. Those only who have been sometime
Catholics can understand what good news it is — and no one on
earth of course fully — but you must be sensible from the first
of what you have gained quite enough to rejoice in it. We shall be
truly glad if you will accept our hospitality, such as it is, and
whenever you settle to come for the purpose you have named. I wish
I could accept your kind wish that I should stand sponsor for you,
but our rule forbids it. However, you will have no difficulty in finding
one. Thank you for what you say about myself, and believe me, my dear
Mr. Walford, Truly yours in Xt, John H. Newman, Congr. Orat.”
