Handsome Northern Pacific Railroad stock issued to
and signed on verso by financier Jay Cooke
COOKE, JAY. (1821-1905). Financier and Banker; founded
Jay Cooke & Company in 1861, destined to become one of the most
widely known banking houses; Serving as treasury agent for the U.S.
government during the Civil War, Cooke's banking house handled with
great success the larger part of the $2 billion in bonds which the
government issued to finance the war effort; After the war, Cooke’s
banking house specialized in financing very large enterprises, most
notably the construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad; In the
depression of 1873, however, the house failed, helping bring on the
financial panic of 1873. A handsome, engraved, stock certificate for
10 shares in the NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD COMPANY. New York, December
1, 1876. Certificate # B1118, issued to JAY COOKE. Engraved vignette
of a steam locomotive at top center with a nice portrait vignette
of Frederick Billings at bottom center. Boldly printed in blue, red
and black, making this one of the more attractive stock certificates
available. Issued to, and signed on verso, as trustee by Jay Cooke.
