STANLEY, SIR HENRY MORTON. (1841-1904). Anglo-American
journalist and explorer of Africa. Autograph Letter Signed three times,
“Henry M. Stanley,” “Sir Henry M. Stanley”
and “H.M.S.,” on his imprinted 2, Richmond Terrace, Whitehall,
S.W. stationery. Four full pages, octavo. London, June 12, 1899. Very
fine condition. To “Monsieur Piston d’Eaubonne.”
Stanley writes:
“Cher Monsieur, Your opinions in regard
to the effect of the Sugar Bounties on Mauritine [?] and others of
their Majesty’s Colonies are shared by me in the fullest degree.
The difference between us is only that you understand the pernicious
effect better than I do—and know so well how to expound your
opinions. I wish I had the time to study the matter thoroughly for
my feelings are very deep. Nevertheless I shall be very glad to have
from one who is a master of the subject — and information you
can give me for if I am not able — through the multitude of
subjects I have to study to inform myself so as to influence public
opinion. I shall have to give my constituents reasons for my vote,
and it would be my endeavor to do so intelligently. This month is
such a busy one with us — and I have written 50 letters a day
during June trying to overtake the mass of correspondence I have to
deal with. This will explain the delay in acknowledging your very
welcome letter. With my best regards to you and your family believe
me Dear Sir yours very sincerely Henry M. Stanley. P.S. You know perhaps
that I am now Sir Henry M. Stanley G.C.B. since the 3rd of June and
on acct. of the hundreds of congratulations received, I have had another
strong reason for dismay at the heap of work before me. H.M.S.”
