Degas complains about being chased
by relentless women
DEGAS, EDGAR. (1834-1917). French painter and sculptor.
Charming Autograph Letter Signed, “Degas,” in French.
Two pages, octavo. No place, no date. Very fine condition. To “My
dear friend.” Degas writes:
“I didn’t very well see a way to
refuse Mme. de Clermont, who has been chasing after me in the neighborhood.
[She’s the] daughter of Dietz Morin, whom I never heard of before.
Therefore, I must have dinner with her tomorrow. I will also have
to drop Manzi on Sunday for the fatal Mme. Drinquant who isn’t
leaving me alone enough — until Saturday. Cousturier wrote me
that he was going to activate the Jeanniot. Louise Malery is unloading
some Sanderax. Reserve your Tuesday for me to eat crepes. You’ll
tell me on Saturday if de la Pompe Street is not yet taken for this
Tuesday. Regards, Degas.”
