“I am grateful for the kind gift you made me of the edition of Lirici Nostri [Our Songs], chosen by you, and printed with the Naples types, for those of noble heart, like yourself, an unwavering lover of literature of Italy. These signs of kindness that you constantly bestow on me increase more and more of my feelings and respect and thanks. The more sincere they are, so I feel I have so much less merit in comparison with yourself. I beg you to continue to manifest to me your kind affections, and to believe me with all consideration and respect, Your most obliged, Antonio Canova.”
